Poll

I'm having a moral dilema.

I buy only organic products when cooking for myself and my family. Since Mere and I are paying for this project ourselves (and have had no donations so far), we wanted to feed as many people as we could on a low budget, which means buying products I normally wouldn't buy for myself.

Should we spend a little more and buy food that is organic and safe (sans rBGH, GM products) and feed less people, or does this not matter when it comes to being close to starvation? Should we at some point switch over to organic products only?

  1. While I do think it is necessary to be concerned with things like buying organically, it just doesn't seem efficient for us yet. I think Lunch Bunch being so new and the lack of donations it is just a better idea to worry more so about quantity. Right now we are doing a lot of good, but instant fix type of good. I think if we were to work with a shelter that was feeding people consistently and then introduce organic as the healthy choice then that would be an awesome step for everyone! I think for now the main idea to feed is the best to focus on. Later once we get this ball rolling a bit more and we have steady or any donations then going organic would be great. Maybe we can even grow some stuff our own!

  2. Yeah, I agree, I voted no too! I was just curious if other people felt the same way and I think most do. What we provide is significantly better than left over fast food.

That Monsanto video made me so angry though.

  6. hi ana and meridyth,

i voted no, and here's why: although i've been a vegetarian for 26 years now and eat organic as much as possible, when it comes to starvation..to be quite blunt...i really wouldn't give a fuck, you know what i mean?

someone hands me a hand-packed meal made with love in their hearts, i'm not even going to ponder the thought of, "hmmmm...is this organic?"

while your effort is at the grassroots stage, i think the higher the level of distribution, the more people you can reach, the better.

but don't sacrifice quality for quantity...be sure to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid the processed/refined shit, which really doesn't count as food in my book.

once the ball is really rolling, you can then slowly incorporate organic products, should you still wish to do so.

went to "fresh and easy" market the other day for the first time, and was surprised at the quality of their fruits/vegetables...very reasonable prices for this type of project too...you scan your items yourself, so they're able to offer food a bit cheaper.

which of course makes me obsess about the loss of a job for a check-out person vs. lower prices, but that's a whole other poll!

bless your sweet hearts for giving back to the community.

    lady v.
